A spokesperson for the National Hurricane Center told Spectrum News that the commission’s findings for 2021 confirm that changing the start date of the hurricane season will not significantly change the hurricane season. In particular, the team considered moving the start date up to two weeks.

Storm Name List 2023

In doing so, the team concluded that an additional 1% of tropical storm activity would occur during this two-week period. Currently, 96% of all tropical storm activity occurs during the current Atlantic hurricane season. An additional 1% was deemed too low to justify moving the start date of the season. Therefore, the Atlantic hurricane season will begin on June 1.

The National Hurricane Center will begin issuing daily tropical weather reports on May 15, which it has been doing since 2021.
