The steering is well weighted and responsive, and comfortable on bumpy roads, so you can steer with great confidence. The petrol engine and electric motor are designed for quiet operation at low revs and fuel economy of around 50mpg.
It’s about to be replaced by a new model, but the current CR-V still deserves to be on this list. All the attributes that made Honda a family SUV favorite in previous generations are here: spacious inside, comfortable on long trips and reliable. On the other hand, the hybrid system rules out the seven-seat option. And the CR-V Hybrid isn’t as efficient as you might think: claimed fuel economy is just 40mpg for all models and CO2 emissions top out at 120g/km.
The fourth edition of the Tucson is certainly the best yet, reinvigorating what was once a competent but conservative family SUV with a cool design and the latest technology. Hyundai is an all-rounder that offers comfortable ride and comfort, excellent build quality and efficiency at a reasonable price for this type of vehicle. All-wheel drive is also standard. There’s a plug-in hybrid option, but the Tucson can still return up to 50 mpg full hybrid, which is slightly cheaper than the PHEV.

Given the Santa Fe’s size and weight, you wouldn’t expect it to be fun to drive, but it feels good and handles well.

The first of these three interests us here; It’s smooth and efficient around town, capable of up to 60 mph, and more practical than the old model. As you’d expect from a modern Kia, the Sportage has a sophisticated interior packed with technology and a bold, striking design that sets it apart from the competition. The ride is on the firm side for comfort, but there’s 587 liters of boot space and Kia says the Sportage Hybrid can return around 50mph.
