The Air Force has selected one in five master sergeants for promotion to the rank of master sergeant, the service announced Dec. 1 — a rate in line with last year, but a rate that slows the trend. The rate of promotion among non-commissioned officers is higher. . this year.

Apart from Air Force Master Sergeants, 514 Master Sergeants were selected to reach the highest rank in the service out of 2,526 applicants, which is 20.34 percent.

This is the highest rate in the last three years and lower than the 20.96% selected in 2019. The promotion rate has increased from 23.82% to 20.83% in the last four years.
The list of newly selected sergeants will be released on December 6 at 9 am, the Air Force Personnel Center said.
While the Air Force continued its general trend of promoting one in five qualified Airmen to E-9, promotion rates for other officer ranks fell in 2022.

Only 9,706 of the 45,991 became staff sergeants — a promotion rate of 21.1 percent, the lowest in a quarter.
And only 4,040 out of 27,296 technical sergeants were selected as master sergeants, a pass rate of 14.8 percent, the lowest since 2010.
But the highest ranks in the Air Force have seen promotion rates — in addition to the E-9 rank, the percentage of master sergeants promoted to master sergeant was 8.28 percent, which is actually a three-year high, but less than that. 1 in 10 common rates at the end of 2010.

Some of the issues affecting promotion rates are wide-ranging — high retention amid the COVID-19 pandemic and declining strength in numbers.
However, in particular, the grades E-5, E-6, and E-7 were affected by recent grade structure reforms designed to combat declining experience among police officers.
“The lack of experience is largely due to the Air Force trying to engage with highly ranked military systems,” the colonel said. James C. “Jim” Barger, commander of the Air Force’s Manpower Analysis Agency, said in a statement in July. If the Air Force has more junior airmen and fewer E5-E7 airmen, we see that the experience level decreases.

The Air Force announced its commander promotions only on December 1, while the Space Force announced promotions to master sergeant and command sergeant major.
Out of 328 qualified constables, 35 were appointed as senior sergeants with a promotion rate of 10.67 per cent. Of the 55 sergeants who qualified, 15 percent, 27.27, became master sergeants.
Given the small but rapidly growing size of the Space Force, the amount of upgrades may vary further, but the overall numbers will likely be the same as in 2021.
